Northumberland is a wonderful part of the UK to visit. Other places to visit to enjoy the countryside include: Allen Banks & Staward Gorge - this is near Hexham, Staward Wood has the remains of a medieval tower and the gorge is formed by the Allen River. Cherryburn At Mickley was where Thomas Bewick was born. As one of Northumberland's greatest artists the area is now home to several tourist sites and shops, with concerns and events.

Northumberland has many ruins and beachs great for people who love the outdoors. It's the most northmost county on the east coast of England and touches Scotland at it's northern border where the romans built Hadrian's Wall and the Housesteads fort at Hexham.

you find the crossing times before you go to maximise the time you can
spend there (somewhere around 7 hours) you can check local press for
times. Some things to do on the Isle include a visit to Lindisfarne
Castle which was built in the 16th century is set on top of a rocky
crag on the Holy Isle overlooking the causeway to the Isle and giving
great views of Farne Island and Bamburgh Castle. Lindisfarne Priory
has been a holy site since the being founded by St. Aiden in the 7th
century AD and is still a pilgrimige site today. Many other things to
do on the Isle too such as a visit to the Lindisfarne Centre or some
shopping in the village for some Lindisfarne Mead. Alnwick Castle & Gardens Alnick Castle is one of the most amazing castles in the country and is sometimes referred to as 'the Windsor of the North' and has been used in many films, most famously are the Harry Potter films. There are many things to see such as wonderful medieval architecture, fine art treasures and luxurious State Rooms. Alnwick Gardens are a must visit if you are going to see the castle, the gardens were created with children in mind, which means that many of the water features can be played in so a dry change of clothes might be advised. The garden is also home to one of the largest treehouses in the world and was completed in 2005. The tree house has 2 restaurents inside and there is live music on Thursdays and Friday evenings there. Farne Islands The Farne Islands of which there are 28 at low tide, are 2-3 miles
off the coast can be visited by using the regular ferry services from
Seahouses which you get to from the A1 and then onto the B1340. The
Farne Islands are the most famous seabird sanctuary in Britain with
over 20 different species. The Islands are also home to the Atlantic
Grey Seal. There are several different boat trips that you can take
with times ranging from 2 1/2 hours to over 5 hours and there are also
different islands that you can choose to tour and you usually get around
an hour on the island you visit although you might have to pay to land
if you are not a National Trust member. Castles Castles close to Berwick include Bamburgh Castle which is around a
20 mile drive using the A1 South and then the B1342 to Banburgh. The
castle is considered one of the best in the country, perched on top
of a basalt outcrop overlooking the North Sea. You can tour the magnificent
Kings Hall, Cross Hall, reception rooms and armoury. Another castle
to visit is Chillingham Castle and it is signed from the A1. As well
as the beautiful castle grounds with the Italian Garden and woodland
walks there are the dungeons and torture chamber to visit inside. The
castle is said to be the most haunted in the country and ghost tours
are held most evenings, although you will need to book in advance for
a ghost tour.
