Ayr

There are many things to see and do around Ayr. The Burns National Heritage park is just a short distance south from Ayr, at this site you will find the now fully restored cottage where Burns was born and there is also a museum and other items of interest in the park related to Burns life here. The Loudoun Castle Family Theme Park is just a 20 minutes drive away and there's everything from rollercoaster rides, log flumes, petting zoo and much more besides. Another great place to visit if you want a different day out is to take a ferry over to the Isle of Arran, to get there you drive up to Ardrossan from where there is a regular ferry service to Brodick Bay on the Isle of Arran, the crossing takes around 55 minutes and you can either take the car or go on foot. 9 miles South of Ayr on the A719 you will find the Electric Brae which is a curious place, due to an optical illusion it appears that things can roll up the hill.


East Lothian/Seton Sands

East Lothian has a beautiful coastline and rolling countryside. Not far from Seton is the Museum of Flight in East Fortune where you can learn about the history of flight and view their collection of aircraft. Also not far away is the Glenkinchie Distillery in Pencaitland which is home of the 'Edinburgh Malt', you can take a tour of the distillery and you will also find an exhibition of malt whisky here. The City of Edinburgh, which is only a 30 minute drive away is a world class tourist destination all year round with many things to offer the visitor from museums, art galleries, theatres, zoo, castle and much more to keep you busy for weeks.


Edinburgh is without doubt one of Scotland's main cultural centres, attracting tourists from all parts of the world who flock here to experience this vibrant city at all times of the year and there is something to please everyone, and as well as the city there is also the wonderful countryside and towns and villages in the surrounding area to visit. Places to visit in Edinburgh include; Edinburgh Castle sitting on top of an extinct volcano in the middle of the city and dominating the cities skyline, there are guided and audio tours of the castle and the views of the city from here are stunning. The Edinburgh Dungeon mixes history and horror with stunning special effects and live actors in this dungeon experience which also includes a vampire boat ride. The Scottish Museum tells the story of Scotland, its land, its culture and its people, from its geological beginnings to the present day, and there are other special exhibitions too. The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is set in an amazing neo-gothic building and the collection gives a visual history of Scotland from the 16th century to the present day, the national photography collection is also housed here. The National Gallery of Scotland has an amazing collection of paintings and sculptures, ranging from the early Renaissance to Post-Impressionism. Edinburgh Zoo as well has having over a 100 animals is also home to the worlds biggest penguin pool and Europe's largest colony of penguins, other attractions here include, Hilltop Safari rides and maze. The Royal Yacht Britannia is permanently moored at the Edinburgh port of Leith, a visitor centre is located in the Ocean Terminal and there is an audio tour of the five decks including the royal apartments and crews quarters. Our Dynamic Earth shows you how the Earth works by taking you on a journey from the big bang and on to the creation and geological history of the planet using interactive displays and galleries. At the Royal Botanical Gardens there are guided and themed tours around what are considered one of the best gardens in the world. The Spirit of the Tattoo is housed in a 150 year old Victorian reservoir and gives you the chance to experience the Tattoo all year round with an interactive exhibition tracing the history of one of Edinburgh's enduring entertainments. Further afield and west of Edinburgh there is the Linlithgow Palace, which is a magnificent ruin set in a park beside Loch Linlithgow and nine miles south of Edinburgh in Newtongrange is the Scottish Mining Museum, which is based at the Lady Victoria Colliery and is one of the best examples of a Victorian colliery, a three storey visitor centre is based at the site.
