Big ideas for saving a lot of money on holiday
Do some research about your destination. Find out what there is to do
in advance so you can plan out your week. You're more likely to blow cash
on doing something if you find yourself at a loose end.
Find out if galleries or musuems are free to visit as these can be really
good ways of finding out more about the place and the people.
Ask at your hotel. The staff will know the area really well and will
be able to point out cheap places and good restaurants.

How to save money when you're on holiday
This
is a list of our hints on how to save money when you're actually away
on holiday.
- Learn the lingo. You'll find even just a few words of the langage
make it easier to eat at non touristy places. You'll also get the
added bonus of cheaper prices and seeing more of the real place you're
visiting.
- If you need to exchange more money whilst you're there always do
a price check on exchange rates.
Commission-free doesn't mean it's necessarily a good deal.
- Visit the tourist information centre for ideas on where to go. The
staff will be able to give you info on good quality tours as well
as free attractions.
- Ask at tourist information about cheapest transport. They should
be able to give you information on any weekly travel tickets which
save you money.
- Don't have a hire car - get the train or bus.
Abroad they are often very cheap, reliable and have air conditioning.
- Avoid using your mobile phone if it's expensive. Best of all, don't
take it! If you want to ring home then get a phone card and use a
payphone.
- Try restaurants further away from attractions. Touristy places are
generally more expensive.
- Don't buy a guide book if you can borrow one from the library -
however, make sure you'll be returning it in time to avoid fines and
don't lose it.
- The beach is generally the cheapest way to spend the day, but take
bottled water with you as sellers on the beach are likely to be dear.
- If you're self catering then the nearest shop to your rooms are
likely to be the most expensive. Look for proper local shops and use
them too.
- Don't buy loads of tat for people - send them a postcard! Or to
save more money take postcards back with you and pop round with them!
- Ask the reps if they know of discounts on shows and entertainment.
They might have free tickets to events!
